Changing Trends in Family Relationships as Reflected in Anitha Desai's Novel "FASTING, FEASTING"

Abstract:
Anitha Desai is an Indian novelist and short story writer. Anitha Desai's novels explore tensions between family members and the alienation of middle class women. This paper discusses parent-child relationship in Anita Desai's novel "Fasting, Feasting,". The novelist considers the concept of traditional parenthood and its replacement by patriarchal values of materialism which has an impact on the psychology of children, leaving them with a feeling of alienation. The novel exposes both Indian and American cultures and places the diverse family values that these cultures provide within the context of two female characters Uma and Aruna.
