Demonstration of Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm in Solar Photovoltaic based Charging System

Abstract:
This paper proposes application of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for controlling the Buck-Boost converter involved in solar charging system for tracking the maximum power point of the photovoltaic (PV) panel. The system comprising of PV panel, PSO algorithm and the converter was initially modeled and the behavior was simulated in MATLAB. Following the successful simulation and promising results, the converter circuit is realized in real hardware using MOSFET and gated with duty cycle generated by a microcontroller which is serially interfaced to personal computer (PC) running the PSO algorithm in MATLAB. This combined setup confirms the re-occurrence of simulation results in the real hardware too.
