THE HISTORY OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION POLICY IN INDIA
Abshana Jamal & Dr. M. K. Joseph
Abstract:
In the Indian constitution, there is a strong emphasis placed on education as a
fundamental right for all children, and several laws and programmes have been put into place in
India to protect this fundamental right. However, there has always been a concern about
inclusion when it comes to children with disabilities. Even though there were special schools for
these differently abled children, that couldn’t support the idea of inclusion. After signing the
“Salamanca Statement and Framework for Action on Special Needs Education”, India has taken
steps to be more inclusive in nature. This paper attempts to explain the different policies and
programmes that India has introduced for making the education system inclusive.
